WikiLeaks has provided us all with a great deal of news of late. The video below provide the background story to the organization and while disturbing at times, is quite simply a must watch. Julian Assange has been branded a traitor by world leaders who say the release of this information endangers many lives. While that is true, is it also that the information itself – not the release of it – is what endangers lives? Regardless of where you stand in the debate, Wikileaks is bringing a very pertinent conversation to the table – what does “freedom of speech”, “freedom of the press” REALLY mean? Is that true for ALL information, or just most? The world media and government leaders are shifting uncomfortably in their chairs as more and more information is released by this group of information rebels.
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
The 1st amendment of the US Constitution
The documentary is made by Swedish SVT, a television network that has been following Assange and Wikileaks since the summer of 2010. Reporters Jesper Huor and Bosse Lindquist travelled to the key countries where Wikileaks operates and managed to create this film.
